Avatar Movie Review

"Avatar," the movement picture director James Cameron has been working on for four years and planning for 15, his first movie since 1997's "Titanic," is really a gamechanger. It lifts the bar.

Like those (very different) movies, "Avatar" stretches the bounds of the cinematic imagination. It shows us something we've never seen before: an entire alien world, a new and complex ecosystem rendered in three dimensions with dazzling fluidity and detail.

Welcome to Pandora, a distant planet and one of the most valuable outposts in the solar system. Here, earthlings mine a rare mineral and try to maintain equitable relations with the indigenous people. The Na'vi are 10 feet tall, blueskinned and increasingly pissed as the humans encroach on their sacred lands.

Jake accepts the offer just because he knows that by this he would be able to walk again on his feet and he would be able to pay off surgery expenses. Avatar is the body of tall, blue Pandora natives known as Na'vi. He travels to Pandora but Dr. Grace Augustine, head of the project, is not happy he does not want to send an inexperienced person on the most important project of her life.

There is a love story brewing between Sam's Na'vi avatar with the Pandora princess (Zo Saldana) and soon he discovers an altogether new world. Literally. He wages a battle of his own with support from a handful of friends from 'sky people' along with tribe members and animals belonging to all shapes and sizes.

Sam Worthington's Hair: It sounds ridiculous, but this is another detail that really stood out. Normally you'll notice that an actor is given a hairstyle that they can have throughout the entire film, but Worthington's hair changed with every time shift in the movie and it always looked completely natural. Yet again, nice touch.

It's every video game you've ever played, ever steamyaction novel you've ever read, every plot line you've seen before in a big budget film. Is it well told? Absolutely! But with all the time and money Cameron put into it, I would expect him to tell an old story well. I get that he took a number of risks, so maybe asking for an original story was taking things too far

Does one admire Cameron for the sheer vision that he has put to tremendous use in the making of "Avatar"? Does one pick up each and every frame in the film and start bisecting it for every pixel which has been designed to perfection? Or does one silently nod in approval for the familiar world of love, brotherhood, attachment, greed, misunderstandings and the ultimate reunion where spirit of togetherness is the ultimate winner?

Obama's West Point speech offers hope but no surprises

Yesterday's night, President Barack Obama traveled to the oldest military academy in the United States to reveal his highly-touted strategy to fetch security to Afghanistan and eliminate terrorist safe havens that intimidate the region and the world.

Emphasizing the need to concern the strategy and resources he said had been lacking since the United States went into Afghanistan, Obama claimed his war plan will concern what's needed to succeed and bring the U.S. mission there to an final.

Obama conceded that his strategy will have a profound impact on its most firsthand audience: thousands of Army officers in training at the U.S. Military Academy who will be called on to carry it out.

According to President Obama's plan, the distribution of additional troops would factor in the current U.S. footprint in Afghanistan, which comprises about 68,000 troops -- a mixture of combat forces and trainers -- spread throughout, but with the east and south serving as focal points. Troops under NATO’s command add a addition of 42,000 troops.

The strategy also demands much from Afghanistan, calling on Afghan President Hamid Karzai to help grow Afghan sureness forces rapidly, concern better governance at the local and popular levels. Deployment lengths for U.S. service members will remain about the same -- seven months for Marines, and 12 months for soldiers. With the planned reduction in U.S. forces in Iraq to 50,000 by August 2010

In that way, Obama stated that only 30,000 more troops would be deployed, far fewer than the 60,000 originally requested by General Stanley McChrystal, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, or the 40,000 many anticipated as a compromise.

Butterballs or Cheese Balls

If you are in Oregon this Thanksgiving, you stand a better than average chance of meeting Tofurkey. More people in New York are searching for caterers to prepare the holiday meal than anywhere else in the US. Live in the Southeast? Brace yourself for a big scoop of broccoli casserole.

And no matter where in the US you are, don’t be amazed if the host molds refrigerated breadstick dough and bakes it into a cornucopia centerpiece. It is the break-out hit recipe of the season at Allrecipes.com, the nation’s largest cooking Web site..

First off, the turkey. While you could go old-fashioned with an oven-cooked meal, one-day searches have soared on the crispy kind: Many may well find a deep-fried fowl on their Thanksgiving table. Queries on the delightful sounding "cajun deep fried turkey recipes" skyrocketed over 1,000%. "Turkey brine" is also popular, as is "roasted turkey recipe." But hey, even searches on "tofurkey," the "bird" carved from soybeans, are big right now. PETA would be proud..

By 9 p.m. Wednesday, 785,000 people had looked up turkey recipes at Allrecipes.com. For most of the day, the site was handling one million page views an hour.

“We built server capacity for the day before Thanksgiving, then use only 50 percent of it the rest of the year,” said Lisa Sharples, president of the site, which is based in Seattle.

For the last five years, Google searches for Thanksgiving recipes have climbed steadily, doubling from 2007 to 2008, according to results from Insights for Search, a tool that indexes the capacity of Google search trends. . .

Dave - Charlie, each to his own

Wannstead - Weis done and dusted

This week, Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis squared off against a common foe: Dave Wannstedt of Pittsburgh.

For Wannstedt, college football was his last chance to be a head coach.

the NFL offensive mastermind returning to coach his alma mater.

In the fall of 2005, Weis and Wannstedt actually began their college head-coaching careers against each other.

Wannstedt has improved his team, slowly but steadily, over the past five seasons.

But then something strange happened: Pitt pulled it together and eked out a victory.. What do Florida Fans think about that.

Wannstedt and Weis are moving in different directions, like two ships passing in the night..
Good luck to them both.

What we learned
1. Dave Wannstedt's teams are now capable of winning close games.
2. Rutgers has improved mightily since the beginning of the season.
3. Syracuse has not improved and is still the worst team in the Big East.

Great American Smokeout

The Great American Smokeout 2009 is today and a spokesperson for the Iowa Chapter of the American Cancer Society is question smokers to take a varied draw near to the yearly event. A-C-S spokesman Chuck Reed says they are encouraging smokers to use the day as a starting point to the end.

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) November 19, 2009 -- For a lots of men, the Great American Smokeout 2009 means a new inception but West Virginian Joe Balog sees it as a grand ending. To Joe, every single November is a milestone anniversary. This year he's celebrating two years of smoke free living. In Nov 2007, Joe turned to Dan Vitchoff, Board Certified Hypnotherapist and President of PA Hypnosis Center in Pittsburgh, in what felt like a 'last straw' to try to leave smoking forever.

That was the thought behind her antismoking poster, which shows a woman with her left side looking young, while her right side looking old, gray and wrinkled.

Should Americans be worried for the expand in cigarette smoking? Yes. Smoking wreckers almost every organ in the human body and is linked to at least 15 different type of cancers. While, after to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking quota have stayed for identical for the past five years, anything short of a refuse is undoubtedly troubling. wiki

I miss Ronnie Brown

I miss Ronnie Brown

The Dolphins season nearly came to an end earlier today.

It won’t be long the way things looked during a 25-23 win against the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Rookie Kory Sperry, who was promoted Saturday from the practice squad, was one of the surprises of the day (three catches, 31 yards, 1 TD).

He was out because of a coach’s decision, but Charlie Anderson and Cam Wake stepped in and combined for two sacks.

On the second one, Henne threw Bess open while the defender’s back was turned, a quality coach Tony Sparano praised in Drew Brees a few weeks back.

Tampa Bay’s TD makes 96 points scored against Miami in the fourth quarter, second-worst in the NFL to Buffalo (101, including 24 Sunday).

Running back Ricky Williams had a big day, finishing with 102 rushing yards, capped by a 27-yard scamper to set up the game-winning FG.

1. Running back Lex Hilliard is likely to get his chance this week. But with no carries this season, will Hilliard be ready?

It was performances like that that earned him a spot on the Miami roster, though to be fair he’s retained it until now with strong special teams play.

Miami will need a strong running game against Carolina, whose own running game entered this week’s games leading the NFC in rushing. Just as Brown and Ricky Williams were a great 1-2 punch, Hilliard and Williams make for a tandem that could pound away at a Carolina run defense, which was ranked 23rd entering the weekend.

2. Linebacker Charlie Anderson made a bigger impact than Joey Porter has all season. But Anderson’s inconsistency, not his talent, has held him back.

{Anderson stepped in for Porter and had one of his best games in two seasons as a Dolphin, with five solo tackles, including a sack, and two forced fumbles.

Anderson, a sixth-year pro, showed big-time flashes a few times a season ago, highlighted by his performance in Toronto against Buffalo (four solos, a sack, two FFs). He followed it with nice outing against San Francisco, including a key sack late in the game.

A season ago, he led the team in penalties for much of the season. On Sunday, he was called for facemask on the second play of the game.

3. Kicker Dan Carpenter answered the challenge of training camp nemesis Connor Barth.

The Dolphins signed Barth during training camp to push Carpenter, who was struggling and admitted he was too focused on mechanics.

But Carpenter finished with four field goals, including the game winner. Hard to argue with that.

SunRail - another push by lawmakers

http://oscnewsgazette.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5102&Itemid=6

Republican leaders, however, say it is Democrats who have been slow to climb aboard.

“Minority Leader Sands’ newfound commitment to creating jobs is encouraging, but it is disappointing that he’s just now realizing how important those jobs are for Floridians,” Hasner said in a statement.

In October, talk of a special session began as Atwater said the federal government was looking for action on other rail projects in Florida before it considers approving the state’s $2.5 billion application for the first leg of the long proposed Tampa-Orlando-Miami bullet train.

SunRail is the commuter rail project for the three-county area in Central Florida – Orange, Osceola and Seminole Counties. Is Florida is moving forward someone said.

“Here’s an interesting picture that takes us back a while. Sometimes it’s difficult to see the long-term impact in transportation planning, but here’s a picture from 1890 that is a transportation project in Central Florida. Sometimes it’s hard to see the long-term impact in transportation planning. As in life, what was once in style often comes back. Isn't it all about choices

Talks that a special session will happen by December to determine SunRail’s future became louder this week, when Central Florida leaders gathered in Orlando Wednesday for a meeting with U.S. Sen. George LeMieux to discuss the $1.2 billion project’s chances of gaining enough approval to become a reality.

Critics have called the deal between the Florida Department of Transportation and CSX unfair to the state due to a no-fault provision that would relieve CSX of legal liability for accidents related to the commuter train.

California Financial News - Budget cuts

Budget cuts will cripple California colleges and universities

From the 1960s to the 1990s the education system in California was second to nobody. Population flocked to this big state so that their young people not only had admission to the K-12 system, but to a social university system that rivals the Ivy League.

The University of California system is a considerable player in the world of secondary education; however, with the latest budget cuts – and the plans for more – that may all be shifting. This is a contortion and will only work to tip the scales in the sinful direction.

California's public pensions need reform

Lawyer of overhauling California's problematic pension system for public employees couldn't have chosen a more providential time to throw away their reform campaign.

The vast California Public Employees' Retirement System is in deep financial doo-doo, having lost tens of billions of dollars in frequently-notional investments, and is telling state and local officials it will need more "contributions." In between, investigations are below way into multimillion-dollar payments to placement agents who arranged some investments.

State Finance Directors Warn of More Trouble Ahead

Short-term budget gaps have knocked about states as revenues plummeted while the recession. Assistance by about $250 billion in funds from the stimulus package expected through the end of next year, states managed to close the gaps this year - 2009. But both finance directors, speaking at a Pew Center on the States event in Washington, were pessimistic about their position' following beyond fiscal 2011

Taylor Swift Country Music Association Awards 2009

On Wednesday evening, the country singer Taylor Swift stormed the Country Music Association Awards 2009 and took home whole 4 prizes for which Taylor was nominated, including the much-coveted Entertainer of the Year trophy.
While it seemed like a confirmation of Swift's success from the country music establishment, not all was pleased with the 19-year-old's win. Country music legend Wynonna Judd spoke out versus Swift's win, though she reversed her position on Thursday.

During an interview on the show's red carpet Wednesday night, the Country legend was asked what advice she would give to Swift. "You want my loyal advice? It's too much too soon," Wynonna said, according to USAToday.com. "Time is God's way of keeping all from happening at once. It's just too much of a good thing too soon. Mom and I rode in a vehicle for the first year of our career to visit radio stations. There was a making of the star, there was a rising-up, and the fans went with us. Now it's over coffee breaks, the success, almost."

But on Thursday, Judd clarified her stance on the message board of her official Web site. "I understand that my comment about Taylor Swift's Entertainer of the Year nomination came across as a negative statement," Wynonna wrote. "My intent was not to take anything away from her talent and contributions to the country music industry, all of which are truly unprecedented for an artist of any age. Taylor is a beautiful, hard-working young woman that deserves the success she has had and I support her as an artist and as a woman in the business."
